I DON’T KNOW THE NAMES OF THE YOGA POSES…WHAT IF I LOOK SILLY?
We all have to start somewhere. When I first started I didn’t know them either. Do some research – Google knows all the pose names. Find a YouTube video (or check out some of my YouTube videos!) to watch or come to a class with a friend. You can also hire me for private yoga lessons with yourself or a group of friends.
DO I HAVE TO BE “IN SHAPE” TO DO A CLASS?
My classes are designed to meet all fitness levels unless otherwise indicated. My suggestion is to contact me to discuss your fitness level and how we can best work together to meet your needs.
I’M NOT FLEXIBLE; CAN I DO YOGA?
Absolutely!!! Yoga poses are meant for everybody and every body! You fit the pose; it doesn’t fit you. A regular yoga practice can improve flexibility, posture and strength, which will in turn improve other things you do like playing with your kids or hiking with your dog.
WHAT IS TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA?
Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TSY) is a yoga class in which the instructor is cognizant that students may have experienced some type of trauma or be suffering from PTSD. The class is sensitive to any triggers and helps the student feel safe and comfortable so that they may start to find some healing from the bottom up through movement of the body to release trapped emotion and stress.
A TSY class may not appear any different than a “regular” yoga class but you will notice subtle differences such as pose names. For example, Child’s Pose would typically be called Resting Pose or Resting Warrior and Corpse Pose would be called Relaxation Pose.
I FIND YOGA BORING. HOW CAN IT BE MORE INTERESTING OR A BETTER WORKOUT?
If you find yoga boring then you shouldn’t give up until you’ve tried different styles of yoga classes or different instructors. A more intense yoga class such as a Power or Athletic class might suit your style.
However, bear in mind that if you are the type of person who likes intensity and doesn’t sit still often (hmmm, like me), then a calming yoga class is actually what you need. Again, don’t give up after your first class. Find a style and instructor that works for you!
IS ANY OF THIS COVERED BY MY HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN?
Unfortunately, in Canada, none of this is covered…yet. In the United States, many insurance plans are now recognizing the therapeutic value of yoga and are providing coverage for treatments by Yoga Therapist.
A Yoga Therapist applies all of yoga’s tools including postures/movement, breath work, meditation, mindfulness, body assessment and alignment, energy work etc. to address the client’s physical, mental and emotional needs creating a holistic approach to wellness.
